I want to become a gourmet

I’ve thought about it for a half an hour, what are my true interests? What’s something I keep on doing and have an irresistible desire to share about it?

It seems like I have a lot of interests. I love reading, watching movies, playing tennis, buying jewelry, and traveling. But these interests come and go. One month I’m into something, the next month I’m not, and then I might like it again a month after that.

I have fleeting passions. The only things I’ve consistently done are eating and going to school. But if I were to write about them, eating feels too casual, and school is just boring.

While I was still thinking, I got a new message on my phone. My Bestie asked, “So, did you finally get to ‘eat’ him or not” And then it hit me. Besides eating, what’s something I’ve always consistently done? Dating.

For me, dating is an interesting experience. It’s like choosing a dish. You have to pick something tasty out of a chaotic mix of options. It’s a complex process—the appearance should be appealing, the experience should be enjoyable, and most importantly, it should be fulfilling. If you’re unlucky, you might end up with something that ruins your appetite or even makes you sick.

My mother language is Chinese, and when I chat with friends, we often compare different dates to different cuisines. A quality date is like fine dining or a must-try dish, while an immature one is like a kids’ meal, and a bad date is like rancid food.

Sometimes we tease each other, saying, “You must be so starving if you’re willing to eat that.” Of course, the highest compliment is, “Another good meal, you’re such a gourmet.”

So I’ve decided! In this blog, I’ll writing about the delicious dishes I’ve tasted. Without doubt, even a gourmet makes mistakes, so I’ll also write about the dishes that left a bad taste.

Welcome to my foodie diary. I hope you find something good to eat.

Hi Jieni! It’s really interesting to metaphorize the dating experience to food. I hadn’t thought about my relationship and association with food in that way before. You’ve inspired me. Because my previous perspective on describing foods would have been to describe the food itself (e.g., the taste, the look) rather than the abstract reactions to the process of experiencing the thing.
